Oxnard is home to many vibrant communities. When you’re here you can live like a local whether you’re craving a palm-studded beach experience or a daily catch dinner with a view. In each part of the city there is so much history meeting the present to see and experience.
Oxnard is a coastal city in California about an hour north of LA if you’re traveling along the 101. Oxnard is a stunning geographical location, beloved by residents and visitors. It sits nestled between Ventura and Malibu along some of the most idyllic SoCal coastlines. The most populous city in Ventura county, the population is just over 200,000, but with such a tight-knit community feel, you’d never know.
The History of Oxnard
Initially, Oxnard was part of Mexico, until 1850 when California joined the United States. The region has Chumash origins, and was divided into ranchos and sold off for agriculture development. One of the biggest agricultural successes for Oxnard was the sugar beet. Local farmers began planting them in 1897. Two years later, founder Henry T. Oxnard invested over $2 million into the American Sugar Beet Factory and so began Oxnard. To this day, the agricultural roots are a vital part of the city’s identity.
