Celebrate Mexican Independence at Fiestas Patrias in Downtown Oxnard.
A Celebration of Culture and Independence
Downtown Oxnard Comes Alive for Fiestas Patrias
Every year in celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day, Downtown Oxnard comes alive with the colors, songs and excitement of Mexican heritage and culture. The holiday is major, as in a two day celebration major. For two whole days, Plaza Park in Downtown Oxnard takes on a fresh, and beloved familiar energy. It’s the hub for events anchored in community pride with representation from every generation celebrating Mexican independence and keeping the spirit alive.
Celebrating freedom and culture
The Origin of Mexican Independence
“Grito de Dolores” is the cry for freedom that sparked a revolution and it’s what’s celebrated during Fiestas Patrias. Over 200 years ago, on September 16, 1810 at around 2:30 am, the cry rang out at an Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Dolores, Mexico. It was a small town near Guanajuato, where the people of the territory were under foreign occupation. That night the Roman Catholic priest, Don Miguel Hidalgo ordered the church bells to be rung. As his parishioners arrived he urged the people of Dolores to revolt against the ruling Spanish government; his urgent speech ignited the war that set the scene for Mexican Independence.
A Living Tradition in Oxnard
In Oxnard, Mexican heritage is a vibrant and integral part of the culture. From bold flavors of food to members of the community, the heritage is strong in Oxnard. For Fiestas Patrias, we celebrate the history and heritage with food and song to red, ceremonial presentations, and white and green flags.
Cultural performances to unite us
Fiestas Patrias in Oxnard is built around live performance, where culture is shared through music, movement and tradition. From daytime performances to evening ceremonies, Plaza Park becomes a stage for celebration.
Mariachi, Folklórico and Live Stage Performances
Plaza Park becomes the main stage for a full lineup of live entertainment throughout the day. Traditional Mariachi bands and Ballet Folklórico dancers are central to the celebration, bringing music and regional dance styles that reflect Mexico’s cultural roots.
These performances are often layered with additional live acts, including local bands and contemporary Latin artists, creating a mix of traditional and modern sounds. The result is a constant flow of music and movement, with performances happening back-to-back as crowds gather around the stage.
A Festival Atmosphere Filled with Culture
Beyond the stage, the entire downtown area reflects the energy of the celebration. Streets surrounding Plaza Park fill with families dressed in traditional attire, food vendors serving regional dishes, and community groups participating in the event.
The combination of live performances, cultural dress and food creates an immersive environment where the celebration extends far beyond a single stage—it becomes a shared community experience across the entire downtown area.
The Grito Ceremony and Cultural Traditions
As the celebration transitions into the evening, attention turns to one of the most meaningful moments of the event: the reenactment of the “Grito de Dolores.”
Often led by civic leaders or representatives connected to the Mexican Consulate, this ceremonial moment honors the original call for independence. The crowd participates in the traditional call-and-response, creating a powerful, unified experience rooted in history and cultural pride.
The ringing of the ceremonial bell—modeled after the original church bell from Dolores—adds to the significance, marking the culmination of a day filled with performance, celebration and remembrance.
The Fiestas Patrias Parade
The celebration often begins in the streets, where the community comes together to kick off the weekend with a vibrant parade. It’s one of the most anticipated moments of Fiestas Patrias in Oxnard.
A Community-Led Celebration Through Downtown
In many years, Fiestas Patrias kicks off with a morning parade that moves through Downtown Oxnard, typically along ‘C’ Street. The procession brings together participants from across the city, including local schools, cultural groups and community organizations, all contributing to the celebration in their own way.
Spectators can expect a lively mix of equestrian groups, marching bands and Folklórico dancers filling the streets with movement and color. With thousands of attendees lining the route in recent years, the parade sets the tone for the rest of the celebration and reflects the strong community pride behind the event.
How to Join the Celebration
Guests are encouraged to take part by wearing traditional attire and bringing flags to wave along the parade route. Whether you’re watching from the sidelines or participating in the procession, the parade is an open invitation to celebrate Mexican Independence alongside the Oxnard community.
Community groups interested in participating in the parade can typically register in advance through the event organizers, with space reserved for schools, cultural groups, businesses and local organizations. Because participation is coordinated ahead of time, those looking to join the procession should check for official registration details as the event approaches.
Gather around the table in Plaza Park
Food is at the center of Fiestas Patrias in Oxnard, where the celebration is just as much about what you taste as what you see. Throughout Plaza Park and Downtown, vendors line the streets serving traditional dishes and handcrafted goods that reflect the culture behind the holiday.
Street Food, Sweets and Traditional Favorites
The festival brings together a mix of local food trucks, pop-up vendors and restaurants serving some of the most recognizable staples of Mexican cuisine. Expect to find street tacos filled with carne asada, al pastor and carnitas, alongside tamales wrapped in corn husks, grilled elote topped with crema, cheese and chili, and fresh churros dusted in cinnamon sugar.
Drinks are just as present, with vendors offering agua frescas in flavors like horchata, jamaica and tamarindo, as well as fresh juices and other refreshing options throughout the day. Sweet treats like paletas, raspados and cotton candy are also common, making it easy to grab something between performances or while walking the festival.
Artisans, Merch and Community Vendors
Beyond the food, the event expands into a lively marketplace filled with local vendors and artisans. Booths often feature handmade goods, candles, jewelry, crafts and traditional Mexican clothing, including embroidered dresses, shirts and accessories that reflect regional styles.
You’ll also find a mix of community booths and small businesses offering everything from souvenirs and festival merchandise to informational displays and cultural exhibits. As you move through Downtown Oxnard, the vendor rows create a continuous experience of shopping, discovery and connection that runs alongside the celebration itself.
