Oxnard is home to some of the most fun, memorable, diverse and exciting festivals in California! Festival season begins with the whale watching season in December/ January, and the Festival of Whales in March. May reminds us that spring is in the air, and flowers are in bloom when you start to smell the sweet smell of strawberries growing on the plains. The California Strawberry Festival in May offers everything strawberry and is a festival that you won't want to miss. Following right behind are the Friday night Summer Concerts at Heritage Square in June, 4th of July fireworks, and the famous Oxnard Salsa Festival in July. Salsa flows in the form of food, music and dance that weekend in Plaza Park in downtown Oxnard. As summer winds down, but the weather is still warm, the Oxnard Autumn Historic Home Tours and Multicultural Festival fill September and October. You can't forget to experience the holiday festivities during the month of December! There is a tree lighting, boat Parade of Lights, decorated historical homes on Christmas Tree Lane, and Tamale Festival ongoing during the down-home holiday parade.

Thanks to the City of Oxnard the flags were also located on nearby streets adjacent to the downtown area. Patriotism to our country and gratitude for our military – active and inactive – was in the air at this popular Oxnard landmark.
Both the Veterans Commemorative Committee and the City of Oxnard organized the program honoring our servicemen and women. From the opening song “America” to the playing of “Taps” to remember our deceased veterans, the ceremony filled the audience with patriotic pride,
The NJROTC Cadets from Port Hueneme High School posted the colors and Christine Portillo added beauty to the Veterans Day observance with her splendid vocals of several patriotic songs. Of course, the ceremonial releasing of the doves by Tony Silerio was a breathtaking symbol of our desire for peace during wartime.
On the decorated stage sat several Oxnard dignitaries such as Ventura County Supervisor John Zaragoza and guest speaker Cdr. Nicolas D. Yamodis, CEC from the U.S. Navy who offered their perspective as veterans. As Master of Ceremonies Steve Weber did an excellent job of welcoming the attendees and introducing the special guests.
Located in the center of the Plaza Park Square is the Oxnard Veterans Memorial giving tribute to all the Oxnard residents who died in U.S. wars since World War I. In a special ceremony Gold Star wife, Joyce Silber placed a wreath at the memorial.
Attending the event was Theresa Luna, mother of Kevin Luna, who died five years ago in Iraq was my highlight of Veterans Day memorial. What an honor to meet a mother who gave her son for the freedom we enjoy in America.
The City of Oxnard is to be saluted for their extra effort to honor the men and women who have served our country in the military forces.
