The Ventura Audubon Society and the Ventura County Maritime Museum are pleased to present an exhibit of posters, Share the Shore: Children's Art, May 1 through June 1, 2010. An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, May 1st, 5-7 pm. Refreshments will be served and the public is invited.
The museum is still located in Oxnard's Fisherman's Wharf, at the intersection of Channel Islands Boulevard and south Victoria Avenue. It is open daily, 11-5, and admission is free.
The juried art show will exhibit the artwork of elementary school children from 25 class rooms in Ventura County who participated in the "Share the Shore" effort to educate the public about how to protect nesting shorebirds. The program was initiated as a grant from Audubon California, Toyota Together Green and the Morrissey Family Foundation to the Ventura Audubon Society.
Some of the posters will be made into signs to be placed on critical habitat fencing which is installed annually along the shore during the birds' nesting season. The public is invited to vote for a "people's choice" award at the show.
The installation of similar children's signs in Central California has resulted in less vandalism to signs and to protective bird fencing.
